Manufacturers Unveil Strategic Plan for Innovation and Growth
Manufacturing is more than just the primary economic driver for Michigan — it is a cornerstone of the state’s identity, powering local communities, creating high-paying jobs and driving innovation across industries. From automotive to cutting-edge technology, Michigan's manufacturing legacy has shaped the past and will continue to define its future.
“Beyond its immediate economic impact, manufacturing shapes the culture and future of Michigan. The investments made by manufacturers — whether in buildings, research and development, technology or job expansion — serve as the economic foundation for future growth and success,” said Mike Johnston, MMA Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and Workforce Development. “To continue thriving, we must ensure our policies are competitive compared to other states that want our jobs and manufacturing assets.”
Entitled Driving Manufacturing Innovation and Growth, MMA’s 2025-26 Legislative & Regulatory Agenda outlines key strategies for building a competitive business climate, fostering innovation and ensuring a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of the 21st-century economy.
Competitive Tax Policy: State government must partner with manufacturers to ensure tax policies remain competitive against the ever-changing policies of governments in other states and around the world. To out-compete other states to attract and retain manufacturing investment, Michigan must continue robust and consistent funding for economic development incentives and ensure competitive tax rates.
Workforce Development and Education Reform: More skilled workers are needed as manufacturing discovers, develops and implements new advanced technologies. To meet that need, Michigan’s education system must offer students robust opportunities for career exploration, Career & Technical Education and work-based learning. Job training programs that effectively deliver the skills needed in the 21st Century economy, like the Going PRO Talent Fund, should be fully funded.
Reasonable and Predictable Business Regulations: A balanced regulatory environment is critical for manufacturers as they embrace new technologies and practices that reduce waste and improve operational efficiencies. Michigan’s regulatory framework should foster scalability and innovation while minimizing burdens on Michigan businesses.
A Vision for Michigan’s Future:
Hear from Mike Johnston, MMA Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and Workforce Development about our newly released policy priorities.
“To remain competitive in today’s rapidly changing global market, Michigan must continue evolving to attract new investments and retain top manufacturing talent,” said John J. Walsh, MMA President & CEO. “Our comprehensive strategic plan is designed to foster growth and innovation, ensuring that Michigan stays on the cutting edge of global competition for years to come.”
“We look forward to working with Governor Gretchen Whitmer, her administration and legislative leaders to maintain Michigan’s role as the global manufacturing leader,” Walsh concluded.
